I am a carver of detailed, life size sculptures of New Zealand native birds. Through my work I strive to express my connection with the wild and nature.
It’s important to me that my hand carved birds are created from salvaged native timbers and that my work has not contributed to the deforestation of the bird’s natural habitat, or unlike taxidermy, a life has not been sacrificed for my art.
I consider that a piece is successful when a bird enthusiast remarks that I have captured an exact likeness and attitude. It justifies the extensive research I devote to each subject and gives me pleasure that my sculptures may prompt the less informed viewer to study more intently when next they encounter a bird in the wild.
My tools of choice are traditional carving hand tools, although I also use power tools in the initial roughing out. Hand tools provide a deeper connection with the medium and the ancient craft of the wood carver. The most high tech hand tool I use is the Pyrography Pen, useful in producing fine feather detail.
