Alexandra Musical Society presents - The Pirates of Penzance
Location: Alexandra Memorial Theatre
Region: Alexandra
A Hilarious farce of sentimental pirates, bumbling policemen, dim witted young lovers and an eccentric Major General.
Alexandra Musical Society Inc. is delighted to bring to you this updated version of the famous Glbert and Sullivan Classic Comedy, “The Pirates of Penzance” . Directed by the acclaimed Bryan Atiken with Musical Direction from Sam van Betuw (his debut), choreography from the delightful Judith Campbell, with our very own live Orchestra this is a show to please.
Priates tells the story of young Frederic, (Nick Goudie), an orphan who has mistakenly been apprenticed to an ineffectual raucous band of pirates, his nursemaid, Ruth (Jules Molloy) being hard of hearing, misunderstood his wish to be a ship's pilot and he was signed up to the pirates instead. Poor Fredric disavows the pirates lifestyle and falls for the beautiful songbird Mabel (Natalija Krsnic) daughter of Major General Stanely (Duncan Anderson).
The Pirate King (Grant Radka), with his side kick, Sam (Blake Luff) discovers that General Stanley, has lied about being an orphan to keep the pirates from steeling his belongings and carrying off his bevy of beautiful daughters, an “ingenious paradox” may prevent the budding romance between young Frederic and Mabel and may even lead to the death of “The very model of a Modern Major -General”.
With a lively cast of seasoned performers and talented newbees, madcap antics throughout the show, Frederics misplaced sense of duty and the not so “hot on the trail” team of police lead by their Sargent (Mark Templeton), preposterous logic generously applied to spice it up, and of course a very "happily ever after" conclusion this show will appeal to the whole family.
Opens 24 Sepember and runs through to 30 September with a Matinee on Sunday 25 September.
