Kārearea: the eastern falcon. Photography by DONNA FALCONER & DARRYL BUSBRIDGE.
This exhibition showcases the remarkable Kārearea, our local eastern falcon, one of three NZ falcon subtypes and the only one to inhabit the South Island high country. The falcons photographed are predominantly from the Aoraki/Mt Cook area with a few images of falcons from further south in the Otago high country.
All falcons photographed are of un-banded wild birds as witnessed in their natural environment. These birds were not lured in with food or anything that may attract their attention (other than our presence). Photos were not staged (i.e., the use of camera flashes) to make them ‘react’ for the camera.
Check out www.nzfalcon.net.nz for more information and the call to establish a trust to raise awareness, promote conservation and undertake research on these incredible birds.
The falcon whisperers that bring you the images of these stunning Kārearea are:
Donna Falconer - As a gold geologist, natural energy healer and photographer who is passionate about the mountains, I have been connecting with and capturing the magic of our local eastern falcons since shifting to the Mackenzie Basin in 2007. Although I’ve only been interacting with falcons for a few years, yes, that is my real (birth) name, so it’s probably in the blood ....
Darryl Busbridge (Buzzy) - Buzzy is a hunter and collector who was born and raised in the Mackenzie Basin. He can be found in a shrubbery up at Aoraki/Mt Cook village where he works as a landscaper, failing that, he’s probably ditched his DOC uniform for even dodgier cameo gear and is out being a deer/tahr/chamois whisperer on the tops somewhere in “mans country".
