In conversation with Jenny Bornholdt
Jenny is a national treasure – she is the author of many celebrated collections of poems including The Rocky Shore which won the Montana New Zealand Book Award for poetry in 2009. She is the editor of several anthologies including Short Poems of New Zealand which is a personal favourite of ours at CODAT. Another book we love is The Longest Breakfast – perfect for reading to your grandchildren when they can’t decide what to have for breakfast!
Jenny has been selected for numerous awards and fellowships, including the Katherine Mansfield Menton Fellowship and the New Zealand Poets Laureate Award. Almost without exception, her poems are accessible and allow us to contemplate the world in a slightly different way – with appreciation and restored attention. She is, in short, “a first-rate writer”.
Jenny and her husband Gregory O’Brien were artists in residence at Henderson House in Alexandra in 2019. They loved their time in Central Otago and made many new friends here, including the late Annemarie Hope Cross and her husband Eric Schusser.
Jenny is thrilled to be returning here to talk about her writing life – and her latest work, A Garden is a Long Time. This beautiful volume was a collaborative effort. A work of art in itself, it combines Jenny’s insightful written word and Annemarie’s haunting photography. Annemarie loved gardens. And of course, she was very well known and loved in Central Otago for her stunning photographic works and for her support for all things arts-related.
Do come and join us for an evening of fine conversation, great food and delicious wine. There will be books for sale and you can also learn more about Annemarie’s photographic process. Let’s celebrate these taonga in style!
