PLAY READING -- Makeover by Craig Thaine
Location: Fortune Theatre’s Play House, Ortive Street
Region: Cromwell
Dates: Sun, 26 August 2012 @ 2pm
Stage South, a group of professional theatre practitioners are working with our very own Fine Thyme Theatre Co over the last weekend in August culminating in a rehearsed reading on Sunday afternoon 26th August. This is a great opportunity for our local theatre company to work alongside professionals in a non-threatening relatively stress-free atmosphere experiencing a script that normally they would not be exposed to.
Makeover has been described as “a wonderfully funny, well-structured play” about Glenys who arranges a reality TV show garden make over for her husband and then sends him off fishing for the weekend. The cast and crew arrive and create mayhem as their larger than life egos collide. What will happen to the plum tree in the new tropical garden setting? Will Jared get his big break if the camera falls in love with him? Will Diana's spirulina have the desired effect?
Craig Thaine has been writing for theatre, radio and tv for over 30 years.
Featuring:
Ross Hansen as Brent Ritter - Mid to late forties, overweight, the suggestion of sex appeal gone to seed. A real kiwi bloke, but goes fishing, but throws the fish back. Appears in Scene 1 and Scene 5 only.
Kelly Keenan as Jared Ritter - Late teens, attractive, dressed in a trendy way, but on a budget. Wears orange gardening shoes and aspires to be in the TV business. His father disapproves of his job in a café.
Jane Preston as Glenys Ritter - Mid to late forties, looks a bit worn down by domesticity, but has a good sense of irony. She writes erotica and has organised to have their back garden made-over
Nik Wilkinson as Diana James - Mid to late forties, attractive and very well presented. Television show front woman. Her need for the odd tipple and relationship with Ian Maxwell are not doing much for her acting career.
Derek Wardell as Ian Maxwell - Early to mid forties, fit, still in good shape, attractive. Married, but having an affair with Diana. He is the garden designer on the television series Soil Soldiers.
Ben Blakely, ( Professional Actor from Dunedin) as Gerry Soames –Late twenties or early thirties, fashionable, but the clothes don’t always suit. He is directing the garden renovation and has serious disagreements with Ian. He is also gay and recovering from a failed relationship.
Liz Harris as Pat - Early to mid thirties, tall and athletic. She is a woman of few words and lots of action. She does the majority of the scene and equipment set –up. Speaking lines only in the last scene.
Play readings are common overseas and in major cities. They are great fun. Plenty of laughs and good entertainment guaranteed.
Afternoon tea will be served and you are very welcome to stay and discuss the play after the reading. Admission is by gold coin donation at the door.
