Speargrass Inn - Melanie Eade
Location: Speargrass Inn
Region: Fruitlands
Dates: Thu, 19 April 2012 - Tue, 5 June 2012
ARTIST: MELANIE EADE
ART STUDIO AND RESIDENCE: 23 PYKE ST, CLYDE, CENTRAL OTAGO
Melanie Eade was born and raised in Wellington, New Zealand. She has attended courses in Visual Communication at Wellington Polytechnic; Fine Arts at Ilam, Christchurch and completed an Interior Design course in Sydney, where she gained a scholarship. While living in Auckland Melanie taught at Whitecliffe College of Art and Design and for the last 20 years her career has been focused on the retail sector as a Retail Design Manager for Australasian shopping centres.
Recently Melanie and her husband decided on a lifestyle change and moved to Clyde where Melanie runs Hartley Homestead Boutique B&B and has resumed painting in her newly renovated art studio overlooking the Clutha river.
Since moving to Central Otago, Melanie's works have been strongly influenced by the history and unique geography of Central Otago. Although her style and technique tend to be dictated by the subject matter, the effect of light on form, whether man made or from nature and textural layering are a common theme in her work.
PIECES OF HISTORY SERIES
New Zealand is a young country and the preservation of our history is vitally important to us all in that it gives us a sense of belonging and a visual, tangible link to our past. This series of paintings are of architectural façade details of buildings, some of which have been recently demolished to make way for glass edifices.
THE CRAFTSMAN AND HIS WIFE SERIES
This is a continuation of Pieces of History but incorporating the domestic content of the time through patterned cup and saucer.
BUTLERS FARM, FRUITLANDS
A stones throw from here is Butlers Farm. John McDonough built the farmhouse and the outbuildings in c. 1873. Five years later, in 1878, the farm was sold to John Butler.
The farm and its lands were at the centre of the disastrous Fruitlands Estate orcharding enterprise, which ran from c. 1915 to the end of the 1920s.
