Location: gallery thirty three
Region: Wanaka
Dates: Fri, 23 September 2011 - Tue, 4 October 2011

  • Martin Hill - FRAGILE CANVAS

Internationally renowned Martin Hill is a Wanaka-based environmental sculptor who in collaboration with his partner, Philippa Jones, creates site specific sculptures from natural materials on both a large and small scale. Hill’s art works make self-assured statements concerning sustainability and industrial ecology. They are a metaphoric expression of the interconnected disposition of each and every living system. Working with natural materials such as sticks, stones, sand, leaves and even ice, he constructs spherical forms to reflect nature’s cyclical patterns. Photography plays a crucial role in Hill’s practice. Capturing the transient seasons and changing light on his ephemeral sculptures. The photographic image functions as an enduring witness long after the original object is washed away. Essentially, the limited edition photograph is all that remains, meaning there Hill’s sculptures have minimum impact on the environment.

Hill and Jones have been collaborating on a new body of work over the past year. Two Otago University Masters’ students, James Blake and Joey Bania, currently in their final year of Science Communication, have been documenting their progress. Blake and Bania’s filming will culminate at the Preview of the exhibition Fragile Canvas debuting at gallery thirty three, fri 23 Sept at 5pm. All welcome. Please join us for a wine with the artists and to view this body of work.
