Wanaka based-artist, Andi Regan, has taken out the major prize at the opening night of the Central Otago Art Awards.
Judges awarded the Central Lakes Trust Excellence Award of $5000 to Ms Regan for "Central Bloom", which explored the use of everyday materials, including plastic cable ties which she hand dyed to create an elegant and delicate bowl.
The runner-up prize, the Central Otago News Award of $2000 - for an outstanding Central Otago artist, was awarded to Megan Huffadine of Bannockburn for her work "A Page of Incantations". Originally a collection of found objects, Megan interpreted and reworked these into sculptural forms, always keeping the viewer interested by their ambiguity.
The Art Awards exhibition of contemporary art show work by 50 New Zealand artists who were was selected from over 200 entries in the Central Otago Art Awards.
This is an exciting opportunity to view and purchase artworks of an extremely high standard in a landmark, new exhibition which will feature the judges' choice of the highest-rating and award-winning entries from the awards.
The exhibition on in the iconic Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery, which also houses fascinating historic artifacts from the area's colourful gold mining history. Alexandra, in the heart of Central Otago, is well known for premium Pinot Noir, delicious fruit and dramatic rocky landscapes.
The town is one hour's drive from Queenstown and Wanaka and has a golden history, dating back to the 1880s. Today Alexandra owes its prosperity to orchardists and wine — and the blossom is spectacular right now!
