Dates: Sat, 8 December 2012

  • The Miner's Ball

As part of the Cardrona 150 celebrations, a big ceilidh / dance is on at the Lake Wanaka Centre on Saturday 8th December, starting at 8.00 p.m.  Doors open at 7.00 p.m.  The band comprises the very best celtic musicians in New Zealand and incorporates Barrie McDonald (Christchurch - accordionist) ; Marcus Turner (Dunedin - multi-instrumentalist) ; Bob Bickerton (Nelson - Irish pipes, flute, bodhran) ; Adrian Higgins (mandolin, banjo) ; Steve Barkman (guitar) ; Read Hudson (bass) all from Dunedin ; with (Martin Curtis - Cardrona) as dance caller and MC.    The evening will mainly comprise traditional Scottish and Irish dance music, with occasional ceilidh spots of songs.   Each dance will be walked through at the beginning and then called throughout the dance, with the emphasis definitely on fun not perfection.

Dressing up in period costume is entirely optional - however there will be prizes for the best dressed couples by way of encouragement.   The Wanaka Lions Club are providing a substantial traditional supper, which is included in the ticket price of $45 per person.    Tickets are now available at Pembroke Wines and Spirits in Wanaka or by phone.

Also at 2.00 p.m. the same afternoon Matin will be doing a small concert at the Cardrona Hall called "Off to the Dry Cardrona."   This will include many of his own songs about the goldrush and Central Otago. This is part of the day's many events in the village of Cardrona and there is no charge.
