New Zealand has an honourable tradition of this craft medium beginning with distinguished practitioners like Anton Seuffert in the 19th century. Using research from contemporary archives and interviews with makers, this presentation will define the parameters of this type of furniture in New Zealand, provide an overview of its visibility during its heyday in the 1980s, and describe the cultural climate for practitioners today.
D Wood studied furniture design and making at the undergraduate level in Canada and went on to do a Masters degree at the Rhode Island School of Design. Her PhD about New Zealand studio furniture was submitted at the end of February. She is passionate about fine craft and has written about all its media in a roster of international publications.
D is currently residing in Henderson House, Alexandra while undertaking an oral history project.
