Michael Hill International Violin Competition
The competition is a biennial event that has, since its inauguration in 2001, catapulted to international recognition and has achieved global standing. It was awarded membership in the prestigious World Federation of Music Competitions (Geneva) in 2004 and has become a much-anticipated and enjoyed highlight in the New Zealand and international musical calendar.
The 18 competitors (ages 18-28) have been auditioned from an average of 28 countries and 130 applications and once they arrive in New Zealand, they perform live for a panel of seven world-renowned artist judges.
The first two rounds are for solo and piano-accompanied violin (Paganini, Mozart, Bach and NZ commission Jack Body) and are held in Queenstown. Following which, the entire Competition shifts up the country to Auckland and the top 6 perform complete piano trios. The finals showcase the top 3 competitors performing concerti in the Auckland Town Hall.
