The legend of William Tell, a Swiss folk hero and expert marksman with a crossbow set in the 14thcentury.The Austrian governor Gessler ordered all theSwiss in Altdorf to bow to a hat set up on a polein the market square. Tell refused to bow to it andwas arrested. Hearing of Tell’s skill as a marksman, Gessler offered him his freedom - if he could shootan apple from his son’s head at 150 paces. Tell shot cleanly. But he had a second arrow ready. Gessler asked why. It was for him, he was told, if Tell had killed his son. Seized again, Tell was taken byboat to Gessler’s castle, but a storm blew up and hemade his escape. Lying in wait for Gessler, he used the second arrow. Then he led the fight to drive the Austrians out.
