Over eight consecutive nights we will be showcasing eight different films in chronological order to their release dates.

A true piece of New Zealand cinematic culture and heritage.

Goodbye Pork Pie (1981): Sat 14 June

New Zealand’s first largescale local hit and the first Kiwi film to go to Cannes.  Young rascal Gerry steals a yellow Mini from a Kaitaia rental company. Heading south, he meets John, who wants his wife back; and a hitchhiker named Shirl. Soon they are driving to Invercargill to find her, with the cops in hot pursuit. Eluding the police with hair-raising driving, verve and trickery, it's not long before the "Blondini gang" are hailed as folk heroes, onscreen and off.

The Piano (1993): Sun 15 June

Best Picture Cannes 1993. 3 Oscars. The film revolves around a mute piano player's passion for playing the piano and her efforts to save enough money to buy her very own piano and teach her daughter how to play. The movie is set during the mid-19th century in a rainy, muddy frontier backwater on the west coast of New Zealand.

Whale Rider (2003): Mon 16 June

On the east coast of New Zealand, the Whangara people believe their presence there dates back a thousand years or more to a single ancestor, Paikea, who escaped death when his canoe capsized by riding to shore on the back of a whale. From then on, Whangara chiefs, always the first-born, always male, have been considered Paikea's direct descendants. Pai, an 11-year-old girl in a patriarchal New Zealand tribe, believes she is destined to be the new chief. But her grandfather Koro is bound by tradition to pick a male leader. Pai loves Koro more than anyone in the world, but she must fight him and a thousand years of tradition to fulfil her destiny.

In My Father’s Den (2004): Tues 17 June

When his father dies, Paul, a world-weary war journalist, returns to his Central Otago hometown. He strikes up an unlikely friendship with a young girl. Their relationship is frowned upon by and when she disappears, the community holds him responsible. The events that follow force Paul to confront a tragic incident he fled as a youth, and to face dark adult secrets. The film marked the debut of a formidable fledgling talent. It was tragically also the last feature for writer-director Brad McGann, who died of cancer in 2007.

The World’s Fastest Indian (2005): Wed 18 June

The true story of a man who never gave up on his dreams of doing something big -- and doing it very, very fast. Burt Munro was born in 1899 in Invercargill. From childhood, Munro had a passion for machines that moved fast, and when he was 21 he bought his first motorcycle, an Indian model with a 600 cc engine. Motorcycles became an obsession that stayed with Munro for the rest of his life, as he constantly tinkered with his beloved Indian machine, modifying the engine and frame, determined to see just how fast he could make it run. In 1967, Munro decided it was high time he proved to himself and the world just what he and his machine could do, and he booked passage for the United States, with the goal of breaking the world's land speed record at Utah's Bonneville Salt Flats.

Sione’s Wedding (2006): Thurs 19 June

In the early '90s they were the Duckrockers, a break dancing crew, now the boys are about to be smacked by age 30, and are still renowned for drunkenness, general tomfoolery and wrecking family events and weddings because of it. As one of their younger brothers’ wedding approaches, they are summoned by their minister and told to find and bring along lady friends. Dating and maturity-finding hijinks ensue.

Boy (2010): Fri 20 June

Boy is obsessed with Michael Jackson - in particular, his dance moves - and his little brother Rocky possibly possesses 'powers'. The pair are trying to find their potential (and the meaning of the word "potential") while living in the shadow of their larger-than-life dad, Alamein. In Boy's eyes, his dad is a hero: a deep-sea diver, war veteran, rugby captain and close relation of Michael Jackson. But in reality Alamein is doing seven years in jail. Now out of the can, Dad returns home and Boy is confronted with the man he thought he remembered.

White Lies - Tuakiri Huna (2013): Sat 21 June

Paraiti is the healer and midwife of her rural, tribal people. But new laws are in force prohibiting unlicensed healers. On a rare trip to the city, she is approached by Maraea, the servant of a wealthy woman, Rebecca, who seeks her knowledge and assistance in order to hide a secret which will destroy Rebecca’s position in European settler society. If the secret is uncovered a life may be lost, but hiding it may also have fatal consequences, forcing a clash of beliefs, deception and ultimate salvation.
