This exhibition has gathered a wide collection of things from the Jones’s. That’s Dad David Jones and daughters, Rachel Hirabayshi, well known to art followers in Central Otago, Amanda Griffin, a digital artist and recently settled into the area and Sarah Jones, a Structural Geologist, working remotely from Cromwell. As a group they illustrate a huge diversity of what working visually is about. 

Artist David Jones is their father, who went full time as a professional artist doing abstract landscapes in the early 70’s. He showed in the Auckland Art Society as a working associate member alongside McCahon, Henderson and others of that now mythical time in New Zealand Art History. He exhibited in Australia and London and now posthumously in Alexandra!

‘Grace, Poetry and Wit’ is a show of art, a history and a space for us to consider the threads that tie sisters and father. This exploration to find the ‘Sight Lines’ between David Jones, Amanda Griffin, Sarah Jones and Rachel Hirabayashi ranges from before 1974 to after 2024. As an exhibition drawn from ideas of the connective tissue between artists, presented by Kristy Baker’s book, we show objects and art from their time and life dedicated to Art Practice. It is a collection of artifacts and artwork and a little poetry to celebrate the achievements and influence of lives lived with art as a constant and vital presence.
