New theatre opening Alexandra [Sun, 3 March 2013]
Lights! Sound! Action! The doors are open, the lights are on and the stage is set for art, music, drama, lectures and films in the new theatre complex in Central Stories. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes this boutique theatre has grown out of the remains of the sports pavilion on Pioneer Park and is a fabulous new use for a previously rarely used space. At a cost of $560,000 the development consists of an extension to the Russell Henderson Art Gallery, internal toilets, two ancillary rooms, a technology room and a 40 seat, tiered theatre. The theatre provides an intimate and cosy space for small productions, lectures and films.
The very latest digital movie projection equipment allows for 2D / 3D and 48 frame projection so both mainstream and art house movies can be shown. Lighting bars on the ceiling and walls with wiring back to the technology room means that small plays and productions can take place on the stage area. A lectern can be set up and wired to the projector for lectures and presentations. Eight speakers deliver high quality sound and a special wall lining makes sure there is no extraneous noise inside the theatre and ensures excellent acoustics. Good lighting, comfortable seats, air conditioning and heating all make for a great experience.
Three groups, the Central Cultural Centre Trust, Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery and Central Cinema have worked together to bring this project to fruition. Karin Bowen, Chair of the Working Group to develop the theatre complex said “The theatre complex provides a top quality, flexible space which can be used by community groups, schools, corporates, agencies and individuals to be creative and present their work. It is an asset to Central Otago giving a dedicated venue for those cultural activities that we all enjoy.”
