Janyne in her Ranfurly studio

Janyne Fletcher is a fine art photographer who has lived and worked in the Māniatoto for many years. Her working studio and gallery on the main street of Ranfurly is where she creates, prints and frames her work, which explores the landscape, light, details and quieter character of Central Otago.

Central Otago is often celebrated for its dramatic mountains, colour and big skies, but I am equally drawn to its quieter side: soft light, muted colour, familiar places and things that can easily be overlooked. I like photography to encourage us to slow down and notice what is already there.

My work has grown beyond traditional landscape photography. Photography is my chosen medium, but it is a means to make art rather than an end in itself. I use multiple exposures, movement, layering, collage and other contemporary techniques alongside more traditional approaches. Sometimes the starting point is a landscape; sometimes it is a small detail, an old building, an object or an unexpected moment. I enjoy following an idea and seeing where it leads. My gallery and working studio are on the main street of Ranfurly. It is a physical, working gallery where I make, edit, print and frame my own work. Visitors are welcome to come in, look around and talk with me about the work, the places behind it and the ideas that led to it. For me, sharing the stories behind the photographs is an important part of the experience.

I have been a professional photographer for 20 years and have received numerous national and international awards and distinctions. I am a Grand Master of the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography (NZIPP), its highest distinction, and an Ilford Master.
