The Cromwell Multicultural Mural Project

A collaboration between the Central Otago District Arts Trust and Welcoming Communities Central Otago.

To welcome cultural diversity in our community and recognise the power of sport and recreation to facilitate, encourage and embrace unity and social cohesion. To recognise various aspects of our culture that are important to us and/ or, are unique to our area.

This mural offers a ‘snapshot’ of the much larger celebration of people and the place in Cromwell in 2023. 

The Alpha Street Reserve was selected as an ideal location for the mural because this recreation space brings together people across culture, gender, and generations.

Football was chosen as one of our subject focuses, as it is one of the only sports played worldwide by both female and male players and is universally recognised as a sport which brings diverse cultures together.

This project provided an opportunity to explore the fusion of art and sport through a contemporary, large-scale art installation and offers the Central Otago community the opportunity to experience artwork created by an international artist.  

The artist commissioned was Melbourne based Matt Ling.
