What's happening in Central Otago
At the Worlds Edge Festival 2024.
Location: Queenstown, Wanaka, Bannockburn and Cromwell
Region: South Island
Dates: Sat, 5 October 2024 - Fri, 18 October 2024 @ Daily
This year's festival commences with Dispersion, initiating the odyssey at Queenstown's vibrant core, Te Atamira. Dispersion and Refraction draw inspiration from this evocative locale, showcasing a fusion of European and Asian folk music. Queenstown also hosts Out of Doors, featuring a piano-centric program that traverses folk-inspired melodies from Hungary, England, and the USA.
AWE's encore in Bannockburn presents novel sonorities with Klezmer music. Fantazi celebrates the ties of folk music to the land and vernacular. The clarinet, a staple in Klezmer for its vocal mimicry, is prominent throughout the program.
Equinox delves into the folk elements within art and music, accentuating the stark contrast between light and shadow. Daylight, twilight, and evening performances set against the picturesque backdrop of Cromwell's Cloudy Bay Shed embody this theme.
The festival reaches WÄnaka with Ængles, delving into the diverse folk influences that sculpted the United Kingdom's 20th-century soundscapes. The journey culminates with Prism, an introspective on the composer's role as a conduit for musical refraction, featuring cherished compositions from Vienna, the 19th-century cultural crossroads where Eastern and Western influences converged.
